The colourful Luzzu fishing boats are about as iconic as they come for the Maltese islands. These funky-coloured vessels stem from Phoenician times, way back when sailors actually used sails. Nowadays, the traditional boats are mostly motorised, and modern-day design made this lineal abstraction possible.

"Mela." The first Maltese word foreigners learn because the locals say it, well, ALL the dang time. Literally meaning such things as, "then, therefore, so, of course, ok, alright and umm," it's universally accepted to just throw this word into any sentence and situation where a breath would otherwise go.
